PHIL'S COMMENTS

This the seventh week of the season had the weather typically autumnal but the matches on the night had to cope with an obviously miss worded question in the fourth round and it caused controversy with one team feeling somewhat correctly aggrieved and spoiling the contest, as it turned the match in their opinion.
Please can sides not mention the actual questions to the sides yet to play there match from this week, Hare and Hounds and Stopes Tavern.
The week had only four matches taking place so the report below will be shortened initially to protect fair play on January 9th when the teams will play the match.
First match to report in was the Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosting the Radcliffe St. Mary’s B’s side. With the B’s flying high early season, but slipping up last week, the visitors were hoping to regain that early form and perhaps put a little pressure on the leaders who were without a game, however the Cricket club had other ideas and followed up last weeks single point win with a match that was a little more decisive with a 45-38 score.
Packhorse Affetside had the newly serviced tour bus of Heap Bridge Social Club Phoenix Knights pulling up in the Car park and the hosts thought their form had completely deserted them as they saw the Knights score quite heavily in the first half, to post a score of 18-27 at the halfway point. However as the saying goes it is a game of two halves and the second saw Sue and the lads hit back, scoring extremely high themselves, and pull back the nine point deficit and then run away to win 52-38 and earn the team of the week award.
The third match, the Ramsbottom Derby between the Rose and Crown and the Shoulder of Mutton would have earned the match of the week award normally, however the visitors on this occasion have posted, a somewhat just grievance against the hosts, that the spirit of the competition had been breached in the fourth round that may have affected the result, when a single point question was worded South America instead of the correct wording of North America. In the final match below the question master who should note the errors, changed the wording during the match to read correctly, which also could have been the solution here, but it wasn’t. As there was confusion with the visitors knowing the correct answer but dismissing it because of the geographical difference, it was answered incorrectly, by the visiting Shoulder side.
Both the teams then agreed that the question was incorrect, with this fact, then a spare question should have been used to clear the confusion and there should have been satisfaction on both sides, however in this case it was not, and the Shoulders lead of five points was cut to just one point at the half way point. With a quick announcement on the night of 4 nil, it has left an agreed point that the spirit of competition had been breached somewhat.
With the opinion of the visiting Shoulder side, that it caused them to take risks in the second half that may have affected the overall result, when there was an ideal spare in the list that perhaps may have also been answered incorrectly. The score posted was a win for the Rose and Crown 44-41……….
Final match this week was at the SunDial Walmersly Rd who had the Rose and Crown Starling visiting. Helen’s Harem, who due to a marriage during the summer can now be aptly called form wise Helen’s Wylie Harem, congratulations go to Helen from the league.
The visitors elected to go first and both sides answered all questions in the first round with the exception of the sporting questions that had both sides stumped 6-6 score. Round two individuals had both teams play well, Round score 6-7.
Round three saw both teams drop points but the Rose gained only a single point further advantage as the SunDial snapped up a bonus point but dropped two questions of there own which went bonus less, Round score 5-6 for totals of 17-19.
Round four Stink or Twist Round, both teams struggled on low scoring two point questions but eventually negotiate them safely however the Rose scored on four points and stuck, but the SunDial missed out on there own four pointer and stuck on two. Round score 2-4 for halftime totals of, SunDial 19 Rose and Crown 23.
Round five saw both sides struggling for answers with the SunDial team of Anne, Helen, Tony and Mr Greenwood proving to have slightly more knowledge against the Rose team of Lee, Anne, Bob and Terry, as the Rose dropped three, all were also missed by the SunDial for bonus points with themselves dropping points on two questions one of which gave a bonus point to the Rose. The scores 4-3 for totals of 23-26.
Round six is the two part question round and it became a turning point in the match with the SunDial pulling the gap back and taking the lead for the first time in the match. First question saw the Harem play safe although they had the correct answer on four and then the Rose missed out completely, however the Harem snapped up a bonus point.
The second questions saw exactly the opposite with the Harem missing out, giving a bonus point to the Rose who then scored a safe two. The third question saw the Harem snap up an excellent 4 points and the Rose who had a correct surname but could not recall a required first name, tactically chose not to answer at all and no bonus point was scored. With both teams opting for a safe two points on the final questions the round score was 9-5 to give overall totals of 32-31. Round seven second individual round, teams had players sacrificing themselves for a more positive or negative choices.
The Rose managed to win the round by a single point and to level the scores at 38-38 going into the final round.
Round Eight saw the Harem have a disaster from the off and when they gave away bonus points on all three questions dropped in the round they saw the writing on the wall. The Rose dropping just one question which went bonus less saw the round score add up to 2-9 for final totals of SunDial 40 Rose and Crown 47 and earn this weeks, match of the week award.
With the Beer leg and tie break money also being pinched by the Rose, collars were turned up when leaving the venue due to a large number of our local law enforcers in the Co-op opposite.
The Radcliffe Cricket Club also had a week off, when hopefully they will lose form disastrously.
In the Return of The Magnificent Controversial Week Seven, Hounds wandered to Little Eva to play Stopes Tavern, who’d been short of bodies for the original encounter. Hounds opted to go second and Stopes took a 3 point lead with questions they already knew the answers to (someone had opened the wrong envelope in a previous week, and the opposition had informed them of recognising the questions, so they’d then restarted with the correct envelope, having done round one of Week 7). Round Two went 6-8 to the Hounds. Stopes came back in Round Three 8-4. Stink Round was 4-2 to the Taverners, giving a half time score of Stopes 27 Hounds 20.
Rounds Five and Six went 4-6 and 6-8 to the Hounds. Stopes took Round Seven 6-4. Round Eight was 3-5 to the Hounds, so Stopes won by a 3 point margin (see First Round). Final score Stopes Tavern 46 Hare and Hounds 43.
In a beer leg (without spares) Hounds won 17-10.

Week 8 31-10-11
Week eight has a normal fixture list taking place taking place and matches look to be anybodies this week and very close competition is expected.
Match one has St. Mary’s B’s hosting Rose and Crown Ramsbottom with both teams having now, an up and down season this will be very close the hosts if they regain that early season form may have the edge but Taylor’s Tigers may well force the draw and that is the prediction.
Match two is this weeks Rammy Derby between Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook and Ramsbottom Cricket Club with this match traditionally unpredictable form wise, the visitors have put together a run of good form, whilst the hosts have forgotten there own form. On paper an away win, just, but after last years predictions I could be wrong, so I will fence sit and say a draw again.
Radcliffe Cricket Club host the PackHorse Affetside and if wishes are granted Sue and the Lads from the PackHorse will thrash Phil Dodd’s unbeaten, high scoring, Cricket Club side and give the rest of the league a very slight chance of catching them up however on form the PackHorse will run the leaders close but the Cricket Club will win but not by many…………perhaps.
Fourth match this week has Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights visiting a strange place, that is they are at home with the SunDial and Helen’s Wylie Harem visiting with both sides showing decent form but not having the rub of the green so to speak, the prediction is a draw, nailed on, as either side could win by a few or many.
Final match has the Rose and Crown Starling hosting Stopes Tavern with the Elves refreshed from half term holidays to warmer climes they will be hoping they don’t catch a cold at the Rose. Form wise it say’s the Rose by a point but the Christmas break is getting closer the Elves always get better closer to Christmas and there break may have changed there luck, the hosts will have to be very wary!!!
Shoulder of Mutton are having a week off .
