PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 8 With Jack Frost providing that seasonal nip in the air, it appeared to affect all the away teams on the night, as all the travellers slipped up even the friendly match. The closest league match on the night was the encounter at Heap Bridge Social Club where the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom were visiting. The Phoenix lads are starting to put a good run of results together and Peter Taylors Rose Rammy side seemed to have slid to a halt since they beat the reigning champions, with the season to be jolly upon us they must hope to have better luck in next weeks raffle at the same venue, as they succumbed 42-31 to the team of the week Heap Bridge Social Club. Swan and Railway B’s hosted the depleted SunDial Walmersly Rd team, with Roger away it was secretly thought that Barney and the Girls might play. However Enid’s Swan B’s are quietly progressing up the table without drawing that much attention to themselves and ran out 47-25 winners. The unbeaten leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club had local rivals the Swan A’s visiting. The Swans have been playing well without winning this season but even a barrel of Mavis’s tonic and a hatful of Julie’s midweek form could not have stopped Phil Dodd’s in form Cricketer’s, as the home side scored heavily and ran out 66-23 winners. The Rose and Crown Starling had Stopes Taverners visiting. With the homeside finding scoring form last week they could have let it slip against a top of there game Tavern team but the visitors with Paul Gardener, Tim Green ,Roger Bolt and Bert Bullough playing caught the hosts carrying their form into this week. The Rose with Anne Thompson and Kieran Goldsbrough on excellent form and the legend Wally Warrington on form in the team rounds although slipping up in both the individuals, took a firm grip of the match in the first half. The second half saw the Taverner’s winning round five and giving the homeside some concerns especially when the Rose played extra safe in the four or two round and the visitors went for top points but they hit the net with the badminton question and gave the home team three points and although winning the individual round where Wally’s hearing aids seemed to fail, the visitors, who were not the only side to do so on the night blanked on the final round. The score 58-31. Final match was the friendly at Rose Bury who entertained the Packhorse Affetside team if this was a point’s match, it would have been match of the week, as the teams were neck and neck at 39 each going into the last round but the Packhorse team blanked to give a final score of 48-39 in favour of the hosts. This concludes the league matches for the year with the yuletide celebrations about to be thrust upon us but next week has the seasonal get-together at the Phoenix Nights venue, where the Ian Openshaw of Rose and Crown Bury will be providing the questions this year and with the raffle and a DAB radio as top prize, along with a warming supper provided, all teams can relax and enjoy themselves. A review of the season so far and the up and coming New Year’s fixtures and a report on the celebrations will be provided over the Christmas period. However a new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on this website.
