PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week8Monday 17th Nov
With a cold snap forecast for the end of the week this weeks quiz was so difficult the scoring froze early, almost every team found some of the questions impossible to even guess an answer. Leaders Radcliffe Cricket club were at home to local rivals Swan and Railway A’s , with the Swans still swimming brightly this season but with team members going down with man-flu recently and Mavis’s tonic swapped for hot lemon, they were no match for the leaders and succumbed 49-23.
Match of the week but only just, was the high flying Heap Bridge Social Club hosting Peter Taylor’s Rose and Crown Rammy in a closely fought encounter the visitors almost pulled of a last gasp win but just managed to avoid that. The Phoenix Lad’s keeping up the pressure at the top of the league with a 40-38 point win.
Swan and Railway B’s had the SunDiallers of Walmersly Rd calling and on a difficult night I bet Helen Lee wished she was in the labour ward already as the ‘Dial went down to a 46-23 defeat.
Final League match of the week was the visit of Stopes Tavern to the Rose and Crown Starling in a match that started of well for the hosts but then the Paul Gardner less Taverners fought there way back into the match when rounds 3,4 and 5 yielded only two points for the hosts. With the Taverner’s captained by Roger Bolt and supported by Tim Green, Bert Bullough and Harry Dutton having chances to win the match but a former history master could not remember Trafalgar , (no names harry I promise). They just missed out beating the Rose and being named match of the week and team of the week. A final round cliffhanger saw Kieran Goldsbrough lead the home side of Anne Thompson, Bob Selby, and Lee Sawbridge to a very narrow victory, 39-35.
The Rose and Crown Bury just pipped rivals Pack Horse in their friendly match to become team of the week with a score of 35-33.
Week 9Monday 24th Nov
Top match of the week is a difficult choice but it has to be the clash between Heap Bridge and Radcliffe Cricket Club ,with the Cricketers playing host the Phoenix lads have a chance to cement there title challenge and it could happen, in a close match this one could just be an away win but only just, if Phil’s lads start to get away then match would be over for the visitors quite easily.
Rose Rammy host Rose Bury and with both teams playing up and down this season, this will go to the wire as well but a draw could be the result here, or only a point in it either way. Stopes Tavern host the PackHorse Affetside in a match that looking at last weeks scoring will be close, I am going to predict a surprise home win, as the host’s are starting to show a little form. Sorry Sue.
Rose Starling host Swan B’s with points being a problem for the home side this year this match is going to be close but if the legend Wally, Sticks to his encyclopedia diet the hosts may have the edge but the visitors could pull a surprise here and a draw is not unheard of!!!!
The SunDial and Swan A’s are on a free week. The Christmas get together is approaching and the top prize could be a Sat Nav thanks to our sponsors Bury Reprographics Ltd.
We have a team that are looking too play a few friend lies so contact Phil.
A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on the website at www.buryquizleague.co.uk
