PHIL'S COMMENTS

This Monday the mild korma evenings of November with just the odd chilly breeze gusting now and then, mean the quiz can be a real vindaloo and teams that like their quizes hot and spicy can really put the opposition into a sweat. The comments received, are varied this week but the results are all very close.
First match was the close game at Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook where the Phoenix Knights of Heap Bridge were the gallant visitors. Ian Openshaw reports, the Phoenix knights won the toss and naturally they elected to go first and wham! promptly shot into a 10 - 4 lead after the first round. Next 2 rounds the individual and consultation were low scoring affairs in which the scoring totalled 7 - 6 to the advantage of the Knights,to give them a 7 point lead, going into what turned out to be the “Stink or Twist” round a real humdinger of a tough round for all teams it seems. In the said round, after much deliberation on one of the questions, and while they were contemplating a guess, a member of Heap Bridge reminded the team that it was the stick or twist round, so they could stick. At which point one of his fellow knights reminded him that this was the first question and they hadn't got any points, so they'd be sticking on zero, Wagner and The Flying Dutchman dragged them under, so they zeroed the round.
The Hounds saw their opportunity to close the gap, but Ronnie (Dutch) Reagan struck again and alas they stuck on 1 point, so went into the break 11 - 17 down.
Second half saw the Hounds start hunting the Knights down and Round 5 saw a 6 - 0 score to the Hounds resulting in match level pegging. Four or two pointers Round six finished 8 apiece.
However a wrong choice of Individual picks by Hounds resulted in a 5 point lead to The Knights going into the last round. The Hounds rallied and won the last round 6 - 4, which was too little too late, resulting in a final score of Hairy Hounds 34 Heap Bridge 37, but at least there was a full set of 10 beers into which The Hounds could cry....... bugger. Team of the week and at last showing a little form again The Phoenix Knights of Heap Bridge Social Club.
Radcliffe Cricket Club had the PackHorse Affetside tieing up at the boundary rail and after a weeks rest Sue and the Pack Lads were hoping to catch the Cricketers in a relaxed and generous mood but the Phil Dodd’s runaway league leaders thought different and no quarter was given, as they ran away to win with a score of 50-31.
Rose and Crown Rammy were the visitors to the SunDial and Barney and the Harem are enjoying a good spell of deserved form as they ran Taylor’s Tigers very close to be just second with a score of 30-34. Peter’s Rose Rammy team is hitting a run of form lately.
The Match of the week was the Radcliffe Derby between the Swan and Railway A and B’s with the A’s being the away team and in a closely fought contest which went down to the wire, the B’s only just managed to take the honours by just one point but who had Mavis’s tonic this week.. It appears as though the b’s have had there wings clipped lately as form has dipped from a few weeks ago when they were outscoring all for fun.Score at the whistle Swan b’s 35 Swan A’s 34.
Final match this week was the visit to the elves of Stopes tavern by the Cricketers of Rammy who have had a mid half stutter recently after them scoring boundaries for fun at the seasons start. In a quiz described by the reporting elf as the worst quiz in the history of quiz’s, the Christmas elves of the Tavern have been building a toy factory of points and overwhelmed the visitors by a score of 39-21. It appears as though the honeymoon is over but we will see yet.......
The Rose and Crown Starling were the team who were singing the constipation blues this week. However they did play a three a side friendly with the same set of questions and the score was 58-31, to one of the teams.

Week 9 Monday 23rd Nov
This week’s games all look to be close contests on paper.
First on the list is the visit of the Swan B’S to Rammy Cricket Club with both teams suffering a loss of form over the past couple of games this may be the opportunity for one side to bloom again.... sorry rammy but an away win is predicted .....just.
Swan A’s have Barney and the Harem visiting and this could be the match of the week with both teams hitting form this will be close and a draw will not be surprising after saying this, the home side may just be hitting the mark a few more times than the visitors.Home win or draw.4 Another very strong contender for match of the week is the visit to the tigers lair of the league leaders Radcliffe Cricketers with the home side playing there best against top opposition, this could be an upset but Phil Dodd’s team will want to stamp there initials on the trophy as quick as possible. Another draw is not as unlikekly as it seems but a close .......home win is on the cards.
Packhorse have the elves of Stopes Tavern climbing the hill carrying Christmas cheer this week and for the home side they may prove a little strong at this time but if the elves spill there cheer the home side will take a long rein to pull them back, away win but it may be sticky for a while.
Final game this week is another contender for game of the week, with the defeat of three weeks ago still smarting it could be time for a quick bit of revenge but the Hairy hounds visit to the Rose could put a final fatal nail into the Rose’s season, however I predict revenge is sweet and a home win is a must!!!!!!!
The Phoenix Knights will be sharpening there swords this week as they enjoy a free week.

Christmas do notice
As teams may have noticed the Hare and Hounds car park can get pretty full on a Monday. the suggestion is that for the Christmas Quiz that teams might want to park on the Co-op car park at the top end of Longsight Road (two minutes walk away) to ease congestion. Suggestions are needed for the major prize for the raffle on the night.

A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side. Contact details along with the league tables are on this website
