PHIL'S COMMENTS

With Bonfire night over for another year and pets calming down after trying to hide in as many places they could, all at once, from the noise, the quiz league sparkled into life this week, with high winds raging outside venues, high scores were to feature in some games.
St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s hosted the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe village this week and as with a lot of teams, found the first half difficult to score points in most rounds. At the halfway point the scores were a close 15-13, but the home side experience showed and they pulled gradually away in the second half to win 43-31.
SunDial Walmersley Rd had the PackHorse Affetside visiting and Helen’s Harem was reduced to three players when their quiz master let them down in the last minute, Stuart stepped down off the team and read. With points being hard to come by in the first half the Harem trailed the PackHorse by two points at the halfway mark with low totals of 12-14. However the Harem dazzled in the second half to overcome adversity and take the match 42-32 to return to winning form.
The Rose and Crown Starling had the Ramsbottom Cricket Club visiting and in a very noisy venue due to a birthday party taking place at the far end which was initially booked for seventeen but ended up being seventy, Amanda the landlady apologised for the difficulties.
The Cricketers elected to go second and after the home side scored with the first, regretted that decision when UKIP’S pound logo taxed them and Lee picked the bonus answer for the home side. The Renault Greek muse of history had both teams punctured but the Cricketers started their innings with Cynthia. The American Green party and the Greek muse of comedy Thalia had the teams again calling the A.A. and then both teams scored the final questions. 5-4 score to the hosts. Second round had the visitors drop the Pickwick papers which the Rose’s Kieran couldn’t quite shuffle up a bonus to add to his own Animal Farm score and both sides scored the next two but the last question on edible testicles had both sides scratching for answers on there own but both teams managed to squeeze bonus points for a round score of 7-5 and totals of 12-9.
Round three saw the Rose side score the first two questions and pick up a bonus Torchwood thanks to Jayne, the Cricketers also dropped the Fleet Street press church and missed the queens Christmas Message also and the Rose couldn’t muster up any bonus points. The Rose dropped the press in St. Bride’s church and just couldn’t recall the Champions Nemesis, which spurred the Cricketers on to take that bonus and score the Essex bankrupt racecourse also, 5-3 round score. Round four, Stick or Twist on a theme of Angels, saw the Rose score a full house eight with all players contributing answers except someone else. The Cricketers were going well but then were struck out by the baseball Anaheim Angels to blank the round. Halftime totals 25-12.
Round five had the Cricketer team of Mick Everett, Ben Dack, Ian Bell and Chris Woolfold hit back with a full house of there own and the home side almost matched them but dropped a “fou” pass with the bishop which wasn’t picked up, a winning round for the visitors at last, 6-8 to pull the deficit back a little.
The two part round six question had both teams opt for two on the first but the Cricketers went for a gambled Audlie on four and missed out and the Rose hit the Haye for a point bonus on the second and played a safe Holyfield for two on their own. Halifax had the visitors bowl wide of the mark on the third which was picked up for another bonus and then pick a safe Toronto. The Cricketers picked up an excellent four on the last, with the home side choosing to confirm the two points for a round score of 10-6 and totals of 41-26. The second individuals had the visitors choosing wrong categories in the first two of U.S. Masters and Kennedy which were picked up for bonuses and both teams scored on the others for a round score of 10-4. The final round had the home side score a full house and grab a bonus bond film with the visitors dropping Irish Snookers Ken Doherty also, for a round score of 9-4 and final totals of 60-34 in a match that was closer than the score suggests.
The excellent fayre of sandwiches and chips were consumed and the beer leg was took by a point by the home side and then the visitors took the film tie break bonus, to end a noisy night which merrily carried on long after teams departed.
The match at Stopes Tavern, had the Rose and Crown Ramsbottom visiting and the potential match of the week where the prediction was for the visitors to perhaps lose by a point had Taylor’s Tigers growling and the Elves were beaten by a purring Tiger Team with a score of 30-46.
Heap Bridge Social Club had the St. Mary’s OscArs visit and the A’s just couldn’t get going at all but the Phoenix Knights scored heavily and ran away with the match and a 57-28 scoreline.
Final game report this week was the visit of the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook to the Champions Radcliffe Cricket Club. Yosemite Sam reports:-
Hairy Hounds went along on a wet and windy Monday night to current league champions Radcliffe Cricket Club hoping that the covers had saved the match. Captain Peter Maguire decided to go first. Both teams failed on the “Greek” car questions, Queen Victoria said she was not a “mused” but the Hairy Hounds blanked on another question which was readily snapped up by the Cricketers who had gained a 7-4 lead at the end of round one. Individual round saw the Hairy Hounds “Pickwick” up a bonus. And the Radicals dropped a b****ck also, so the Hairies won the round to gain the lead overall round score 4-9. Round Three saw the Cricketers blank on three out of four questions but pick up a bonus point, the Hairy Hounds also let two slip by but picked up two bonus points to win the round 3-6. Both teams stuck on two in round four Stick or Twist to give half time totals of Radcliffe Cricketers 16 Hairy Hounds 21.
Hairy Hounds got the only “fou” unanswerable question in round five meaning the Cricketers had hauled back two points with an 8-6 score. Two parters had the Hairy Hounds get a maximum four on the Toronto question thanks to the fact that two of the Hounds had bought Upper Canada beers from an outlet in Scarborough in 1987. All other answers went for two points each to the relevant teams. In the second individual round seven the Mighty Cannon fired off a volley of answers on the 2010 Sports question, allowing the Hairy Hounds to take the round 6-9. This gave the Hairy Hounds an eight point lead going into the last round, would it be enough? A fighting comeback from the Cricketers in the last round almost wiped that lead out and it meant it still required a correct answer from the Hairy Hounds on the final question, to give them an overall victory. Round Eight score 9-4 to Buddy’s crew. Final Score Radcliffe Cricket Club 47 Hare and Hounds 50.
Phil Dodd’s men took the beer leg dropping only one catch. The Sour Cream and Onion Party mix lasted well into the night (well that’s to say the taste of it did) and despites Phil D’s efforts, the Mighty Shakers still lost out to the Wirralites. Match of the week goes to this match and team of the week to the Hairy Hounds.

Week 9 15-11-2010
A full fixture list for the week has potential top matches with almost every game.
First game sees the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting Rammy Cricketers and with both teams finding last week tough, this week won’t be different and the match looks to be very close with a win just… for the visiting Elves.
St. Mary’s OscArs have league leaders Rose and Crown Starling visiting and in a match that will be tougher for the leaders than people may expect the home side will perhaps upset them in many rounds…. A win for the visitors but only just!
Rose and Crown Rammy have the Heap Bridge Phoenix knights charging in and in a potential match of the week with both teams flying high a draw won’t be a surprise but the visitors may, and only just may tame the Tigers.
Shoulder of Mutton play host to the SunDial and Helen’s Harem this has an excellent match written all over it and with a return to early season form the Harem will want to carry this forward but the Shoulder will make this difficult and they may just come out on top but this game has draw being the prediction!
PackHorse Affetside host champions Radcliffe Cricketers and after last weeks mauling by the Harem the hosts will play better and Phil Dodd will have his side in training this week to get back to winning form, closer than perhaps both teams expect and a home win will not be far off but the visitors may just have the edge.
Final match see the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook host St. Mary’s B’s and this has definite match of the week potential. The Host’s may still be buzzing from last weeks victory and to keep the pressure on at the top must take the points. The visitors blow hot and cold in many games as well as alternate weeks, close…. and a draw is close by but the home side may just take the game by not many at all!
