PHIL'S COMMENTS

The Eighth week of the season had door knockers and bells of the town besieged by children, where is the bad weather when you need it?
The week had a full fixture list taking place taking place and some very close matches to report on.
First match to report in was the Ramsbottom Derby with the Cricket Club visiting the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook. With Yosemite Sam being AWOL, watching some C from Preston, a cowboy who could be referred to as “the Man with two names”, the Mighty Cannon once again stepped into the breach, this time as player and cub reporter:- On this Halloween night the Rammy Cricket Club opted to go first, the wrong trick to play and it eventually gave the Hairy Hounds a treat.
Early exchanges went first one way then the other, with each side winning two rounds each in the first half. Individual highlights were the Hounds Andy Ainsworth’s vocabulary of four letter words, and several were added to the list, when the Hairy Hounds were down at the half way stage. Hare and Hounds 20 Ramsbottom Cricket Club 22.
The second half started even and by the end of round 6 it was 37 points each, with the Hairy Hounds making a couple of good four pointers to level the score and it left them looking like the Cat (Stevens) had got the cream.
Despite some devilishly difficult questions in round 7, Andy Ainsworth’s Oscar winning individual performance on film festivals, plus Peter Maguire’s clean sweep of seaside locations gave the Hairy hounds a five point margin going into the last round. Despite a tense finish with the Hairy Hounds trying not to “Lark” about but still ending up losing the round 6-3, they avoided a Halloween Horror and just manage to secure the victory. Hare and Hounds 46 Ramsbottom Cricket Club 44.
Packhorse Affetside were visiting the unbeaten league leaders and current champions Radcliffe Cricket Club and they found the champions had not lost there form in the week off but they failed to top score on the night with Sue and the lads going down to a 54-31 score.
The third match, saw the enigma that is St. Mary’s B Radcliffe host the Rose and Crown Rammy and Taylor’s Tigers with the B’s strengthening the enigma by turning recent form around again and top scoring on the night, running away with the match 57–38.
Fourth match this week was the match of the week with Heap Bridge Social Club touching base and having the SunDial Walmersley rd calling this week. Form wise this match could have gone either way and the prediction was a draw, both teams scored well on an entertaining night and it went down to the final question bonus with the Sundial slam dunking the bonus basketball player to grab the win by a single point 43-44.
The final match took place at the Rose and Crown Starling who had the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting after there mid-term holiday’s, and the Rose having invited John Heenan to play for them, make his first appearance. The suntanned Elves decided to go second.
Round one saw the only question to be missed picked up as a bonus when the Elves donated the Samaritans to the hosts, 9-6 score. Round two individuals with categories of Darts, Country Seats, Elements, Four Letter T words. First category of darts saw both teams miss the board and no points scored when number positions couldn’t be recognised. Country seats saw the Rose score three for the easy Chatsworth resident and the more difficult Belvoir Castle was snapped up for a bonus. The third category Elements saw a little confusion amongst the teams, as the Rose failed to answer Methane which the Elves mined for a bonus but the confusion with Plumbago ruled as both teams thought of lead (Plumbum), however the question was “Plumbago is an allotropic form of which non-metallic element”? If looked up on the web the answer is, it is another word for graphite (pencil lead) and hence the correct answer is Carbon as stated.
The fourth category turned out to be just as difficult with both sides missing Tyro and tine being picked up as a bonus by the Rose. Round score 4-1, totals 13-7.
Round three was a strictly disahhhhhhhster for the Rose when only Roy Keane scored for them. The Elves missed just the Gilbert and Sullivan Trial by Jury and picked up a bonus “The Hour” aptly for the time of year, to post a score of 2-7 for the round and haul the score back to 15-14. Round four stink or twist round saw the Rose get to four courtesy of Jazz fan Lee but then stick and miss out with a thought of but not verbalised Albert Finney. The Elves were stumped on there own Jazz musicians instrument and stuck on two for half time totals of Rose and Crown 19 Stopes Tavern 16.
Round five saw the Elves score a full house but the Rose missing out on Homer Simpson in “The day of the Locust” and the Borg-Warner trophy being awarded to the winner of the Indy 500. Scores 4-8 and the lead had changed hands with the advantage now with the Elves of Ian Brealey, Roger Bolt, Harry Bullough and Paul Gardner by a single point 23-24.
Round six two parters saw the lead switch question by question with the Elves missing out on Algeria in the first, with the Rose picking up the bonus then opting for a safe two with Syria. The Elves hit back with a four point William Brown and the Rose took a safe Doctor Doolittle. The Elves hit a safe Cubism and then scored a single bonus with Dada. Cat Stevens was safely in the bag for two with the Elves but the Rose tied the round with a four point Marianne Faithfull, 9-9.
Round seven individual had categories of English Seaside, Devlish Proverb, Scottish Birds and Film festivals first two categories had both teams score on there own. Scottish birds didn’t have Lulu and Kirsty Wark as answer’s and the more difficult translations of “Bubbly Jock” and “Gowk” went begging. (Turkey and Cuckoo, by the way). Final questions were both answered for 6-6. Total scores 38-39.
Final round saw poetry fly over the heads of both teams with the ode’s of West wind and Skylark. The Rose also dropped the basketball player Larry Bird who was picked up by the excellent Stopes Tavern Elves to take the round and the match 4-7, with final scores of Rose and Crown 42 Stopes Tavern 46 and earn the Team of the week award for the Stopes Tavern.
The beer round was won by the Rose and the Tie break went to the Elves along with the chocolate. The Shoulder of Mutton had a week off.

Week 9 7-11-11
Week nine has a full fixture list with exciting ties all the way down the list.
Match one has St. Mary’s B’s visiting the Hare and Hounds and both sides are coming off good wins, so this is predictably close but if the B’s are on top form they may just win however I have a feeling the Hounds by a point.
Match two Ramsbottom Cricket Club host the Rose and Crown Starling with both sides going down narrowly last week the form book says perhaps the hosts will win but if the visitors can grab some form who knows. Home win.
Heap Bridge Phoenix Knights are on tour again and they visit Stopes Tavern, if form holds then the Elves will win, but the visitors have to hit a run of luck soon and it just might be this week. Home win but it will be very close.
SunDial host the unbeaten champions Radcliffe Cricket Club, however this match will be closer than both teams may presume and although you cannot tip a home win form wise , it will be close.
The PackHorse have Shoulder of Mutton visiting and Sue will want her lads to bounce back after the mauling last week this may happen but it may only be a last gasp win and the Shoulder could also pinch it.
Rammy Rose and Crown are having a week off, and the Tigers are sharpening there claws.
The Christmas function is looming and ideas for Raffle first prizes are required from teams.
New Players are wanted to strengthen teams contact the league secretary.
