PHIL'S COMMENTS
Week 9 Jan7th The league resumed after the festive break and as is traditional our question masters at 21rst Century Quiz provided a stern test to clear the celebratory cobwebs away. Match of the day turned out to be at the League leaders Radcliffe Cricket Club who had the Heap Bridge Social Club visiting, The visiting Phoenix lads played superb throughout the evening and took the first points of the season off of the runaway leaders in what Phil Dodd said was an excellent match, that the Cricketers only just managed to earn a point in the last round when they pulled level to register a final score of 41-41. Team of the week Heap Bridge Social club. Rose and Crown Ramsbottom hosted the Rose and Crown Rammy, the Rose Bury took a lead in the first round of seven points when Rammy blanked, then hung on under pressure as Rose Rammy won five rounds during the match but Peter Maguire’s intimate knowledge of the Royal bedchamber etiquette swung the match in favour of the visitors to pot a win with a score of 42-44. Stopes Tavern played host to the Packhorse Affetside, in an enjoyable match that could have gone either way Paul Gardner’s men held out under intense pressure from a feisty Packhorse team with Sue Pinder providing vocal accompaniments to try and influence the final outcome. In another close score the result was a 39-36 win for the home side. Final match of the evening was at Rose and Crown Starling who had the Swan and Railway B’s visiting. Alec Fontaine has his team of Harry Wilkinson, John Hill and Ann Marsh making steady progress up the table into honours contention this year and this match turned out to be as tough as predicted. Keiran Goldsbrough’s knowledge of the Wacky Races Anthill Mob and Carry on films proving crucial on the night for the home side in a match that both sides found it tough to score especially in round four where the score was 1-0. The match was decided on the four or two point round when the Rose took a five point lead which stretched to eight in the individuals however the final score was a close 42-38 point win in favour of the Rose Starling. Week 10 Monday Jan 14th With the leaders having a free week in this final week before the half way turnaround, the matches are looking very intriguing. The Swan and Railway A’s have Peter Taylor’s Rose and Crown Rammy side visiting, the home side will have to be fully fuelled on Mavis’s tonic and Julie and Louise will have to be on top form to squeeze a result from this encounter but on this weeks tough rounds for scoring it may be possible. A win for Rammy is most likely though but maybe only just. The Sun Dial have the Packhorse Affetside cantering in and in what may turn out to be a noisy affair the home side could take the points. However the Packhorse team want to stop there recent slide down the table and may just prove too strong in a hard fought match, a draw is not unlikely either but it will be very competitive whatever. Stopes Tavern have the Swan B’s visiting, this one could go either way also but I have a feeling that the homeside may just sneak this one if the questions are similar to this week but another draw could be on the cards. Final competitive match is the tip for match of the week between Rose and Crown Bury and Heap Bridge phoenix lads with the excellent result of this week still fresh the Phoenix lads will want to consolidate but Ian’s Rose team want to be there at the mix also, if the form book hold’s it could be a draw also but the visitors may just sneak this one but only just. The Rose and Crown Starling will be having a friendly match at the Bridge Inn Dumers Lane this week.
