PHIL'S COMMENTS
On these damp, dark and windy Monday nights, a warm hostelry is a must and our venues are all providing a homely setting. The quiz is also providing warm fair and competitive matches are the norm now across the board, with the exception of one team who can’t seem to stop winning.
First match this week was the visit to the mavis fueled Swan and Railway A’s by the SunDial Walmersly Road team of Barney and the Harem, with the first half being even , the Swan a’s took another round of Mavis’s tonic at the break and took off in the second half to leave the visitors trailing and romp to their first win of the season with a score of 43-32. The Swans did a lap of honour round the bar in celebration reports John Heenan. Almost but not quite team of the week.
The team of the week just pipping the Swan’s were the PackHorse team who were this week Sue and the lad’s minus Sue, who is suffering with the seasonal heavy cold and was sidelined, so the team consisted of Simon,James,Adrian, and Mike of course, The visitors were the elves of Stopes Tavern looking to continue there run of wins, but the elves forgot to take Christmas with them this week on there visit up the hill and the Packhorse stole all the presents to win quite comprehensivly by a score of 48-36.
The leaders Radcliffe Cricket club were visiting Peter Taylors Tigers at Rose and Crown Rammy this week and they took no prisoners and silenced the tigers by rolling to a 53 -28 point win, Phil Dodd’s team are head and shoulders above everyone in the table and who or which team will be the one’s to beat them, if any one is to challenge them a team has to do it soon?
Match of the week this week and in consequetive appearences in the category is the Swan and Railway B’s, who were the visitors to the muddy surroundings of Rammy Cricket club, in a match that there was never more than a couple of points in it the visitors went into the last round trailing the hosts by a couple of points, but in a turnaround managed to get to the last question and be leading by a point however they could only see the answer given be ruled out, when they forgot about “Pricilla” and only answered the “Queen of the desert” so over it went and the home Cricketers picked it up for the leveling point to end the match on 42 -42. A cracking game all agreed.
Final match this week was the visit of the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook to the Rose and Crown Starling and with a win against last years champions just three weeks ago at there home venue the visitors were hoping for a quick repeat score but the Rose team has started to improve over the last couple of games so it was always going to be a tough game allround the first round went to the home team when they picked a bonus on the first question and the Hairy hounds missed a bonus on the last 7-6 the score. Second round individuals was a disaster for the visitors when only 3 points was tallied up to the home sides 8 for a score of 15-9. Round three had the hosts of Anne Thompson, Terry Brierley, Kieran Goldsbrough and someone else scoring heavily again to take the tally to 24-11. Now this season the stick or twist round has been a stinker and on the night it was no exception to that again, as the visitors of Mickey Mouse (Peter Maguire), Daffy Duck(Dave Wright),Bugs Bunny (Neil Whittaker) and old Yosemite Sam (Ian Openshaw) managed to get to two points and celebrated when they took the round because the home side had no viewers of the US Series “Saving Grace”so stuck on a single point.Half time score 25-13.
The home caterers tried to assist by providing distractions of home made cream buns but they were impounded by the visiting support.
Second half round five saw the Rose extend there lead in rounds five to 30-15 and only a couple of make sure decisions meant a score of 8-6 in the four or two part questions with both teams blanking one question also. The second individuals had each team score a full house except ER got in the way so six apeice for the home side to have an advantage of 44-27 going into the last round. The Hairy Hounds scored there first full house of the night to take the round 8-6 but still lose 50-35 overall.
Hare and Hounds (the alternative version as told by Yosemite Sam)
Hare + Hounds were a few bodies short, so rustled up some Cartoon Characters to help them out. The night of cartoon capers started to go wrong when Mickey Mouse decided to go first, with Daffy Duck muttering oh we're going first are we (as he always does). This option usually works, but 21st Century obviously switched it round this week. First round was close, one point lead to Rose Starling. Second round saw the cartoon characters collapse, they obviously know nothing of the island of Lesbos's occupants, Daffy Duck couldn't come up with the Lesbos jockey and Bugs Bunny turned TaTu into The Cheeky Girls. Yosemite Sam came up with a Big Breakfast presenter that was 5 years too early and Mickey Mouse got on his High horse (Pegasus) scoring their only 3 points of the round. If losing 8 - 3 was bad in round 2, they topped it going down 9 - 2 in round 3. The Rose came unstuck in the stick or twist round, losing 2 - 1 (woo-hoo, The Cartoon Hounds held a party). Half-time 25 -13 to the Rose. A 5 -2 defeat in round 5 left the Hairy Hounds in familiar territory (having only 50% of opposition's score). The final 3 rounds saw a closer battle with both teams scoring 20 points each. So The Rose Starling (last season's “Great Double”(ED) Champions) celebrated with a 50 - 35 win. The Hairy Hounds, who were missing Boo Boo (working away) and stand-in Chicken Licken (cried off with a cold), were heard to say "That's All Folks" as they left. At least Yosemite Sam enjoyed Miss Prissy (Old Speckled Hen). Thanks to Bugs Bunny for his last minute guest appearance.
The Phoenix knights were round the table this week.

Week 10 Monday 30th Nov
This week’s games could provide some surprising results looking at the form book.
Swan and Railway B host the Rose and Crown Starling in what could be the third match of the week in a row for the b’s, with Rose at last showing some form, and the hosts returning to form, this could be very close, a draw is not out of the question but an away win ..... just.
SunDial has the Rammy Cricketers bowling in and looking at recent form both teams are having an indifferent time of it. If Barney and the Harem carry on improving this one will be close and may seem to be to many as an upset if they win but not to me, and the Cricketers are also returning to form after a hiccup for a match or two so the result ...... an away win but a draw could be on the cards!
Leaders Radcliffe Cricketers have the mavis fueled Swan A’s gliding up to the wicket and in good form too, so although the Cricketers may win this, the visitors will not be far behind and may surprise the hosts and probable winners by running them very close.
Hairy Hounds have a quick return against the Rose Rammy and with the visiting tigers getting mauled by the leaders last week they will be looking to make amends this week, And the Hairy Hounds will also be looking for a return to form also. With a draw three weeks ago, this one may also be a similar result but the Hounds will hunt the tiger this time and just prevail I think. Final game this week and another potential match of the week is the visit of Sue and the lads from the PackHorse to the Phoenix Knights at Heap Bridge Social Club. The nights have had a week to regroup and will be looking to reboot there season, with the Pack Horse having an excellent win this week they may just have the edge though..... and only just!!!
The Stopes Tavern Elves are stoking up on Christmas spirit this week.

Christmas do notice
As teams may have noticed the Hare and Hounds car park can get pretty full on a Monday. the suggestion is that for the Christmas Quiz that teams might want to park on the Co-op car park at the top end of Longsight Road (two minutes walk away) to ease congestion. Suggestions are needed for the major prize for the raffle on the night.

A new challenge is always welcome from any pub, club, or society wanting to test their metal against a regular league side.
