PHIL'S COMMENTS
|
On yet another cold and wet night boding the onset of winter, the quiz league sides assembled in warm venues for a night that turned out to be very difficult for most teams but it made for some tense and exciting games, with all scores being very similar. Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village had SunDial Walmersley Rd visiting and Helen reports she nominated herself for thicko of the week award as in a close competitive match the Harem came out second best and the Shoulder team gained there second win of the season final score 42-37. John Ireland can see nothing but trophies, glittering prizes and glory ahead. The Rose and Crown Ramsbottom had the Heap Bridge Social Club Phoenix nights visiting and neither side gave an inch for most of the match, the knights couldn’t tame the Tigers for most of the match and the scores ended up a familiar 42-37. Match of the week took place at the PackHorse Affetside this week that had the champions Radcliffe Cricket Club climbing the hill. Both teams found scoring hard and in a tense last round the visitors finally secured a nervous victory by a single point 40-41. Ramsbottom Cricket Club had the Stopes Tavern Elves marching in and both teams played well on the night, the Elves pushed hard throughout the match but in another tense final round the Cricketers finally took the game with a score of 43-39. The Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook had the St. Mary’s Radcliffe B’s visiting Yosemite Sam reports:- St. Mary’s B (probably the Hairy Hounds Bogey side) arrived at Holcombe Brook for Monday night’s entertainment. St. Mary’s went first and answered questions 2 and 3 whilst the Hairy Hounds answered questions 1 and 4, to give a first round score of 5 all. Second round saw all the individuals answered except for the vanishing Aussie P.M. score in the round 6-8 to St. Mary’s for a total of 11-13. Rounds Three and Four were also took by St. Mary’s with scores of 4-7 and 0-2 respectively to increase there lead and give halftime totals of Hare and Hounds 15 St. Mary’s B’s 22. Second half saw the Hounds win a round at last when they took Round five with a score of 7-6 to reduce the deficit by a point. However St. Mary’s took the two parters 6-11 to increase the overall lead once more to a 28- 39 scoreline. Second individual round seven saw The Mighty cannon showing his street villainy expertise, edging the round for the Hairy Hounds 5-3. The final round saw the Hairy Hounds continue the fightback with good scoring but the questions ran out, giving a round score of 7-4 and final totals of Hare and Hounds 40 St. Mary’s B’s 46. Beer leg saw the Hounds take the cash but we won’t mention the chicken pudding !?!?! Final match report this week was the visit of the league leaders Rose and Crown Starling to the St. Mary’s Radcliffe OscAr’s. The Rose elected to go first and not surprisingly dropped the French fashion house of Givenchy straight away which wasn’t picked up for a bonus and the OscAr’s reciprocated by dropping their fashion house John Galliano question which also wasn’t picked up for round total’s of 6 each. Round 2 individuals saw only someone else fail on the easier Aussie P.M. of Gough Whitlam which wasn’t picked up and the OscAr’s failed only on the T.V. Western Cheyenne which was picked up by Bob for the visitors on his return from a cruise holiday where he also cleaned up on the on-board quiz apparently. Round Score 6-7 for a total of 13-12. Round three saw the Rose blank completely on there own questions concerning Hygiene Nobel Prizes, Sweden, Felix and reflected Radiance Albido which were also missed for bonuses but pick up a bonus point for the only question missed by the OscArs on I luminosity, 6-1 score, this gave the OscArs a deserved lead of 14-18. Round four stink or twist Pearls before swine saw the Pig of an eight point Adriatic question confuse the Rose and lose them the points when Dubrovnik turned out to be the answer. The OscArs stuck on two when Ceylon’s pearl fishers netted them to give halftime totals of St. Mary’s A’s 20 Rose and Crown 14. Round five saw a repeat of the first round when both teams scored six both teams missed the third questions on Romania’s securitate and Private eye’s Lord Gnome. Round six two parters saw the OscArs team of Nigel Saunders, John Harris, Carl Dykes and John Heenan miss just the difficult Goethe answer on two points but score all others two each. the visiting Rose picked up the bonus Goethe point, thanks to Anne and the Rose also scored on all other including a four point Carnegie to give round score of 6-11 and to reduce the Oscars lead to just a point overall 32-31. Round seven was the crucial round on the night as the Rose scored heavily with a full house and two bonuses with Calvados from Terry and St.Moritz from someone else the OscArs also missed The Jersey Boys and only picked the Corrie villain for a round score of 2-10 and totals of 34-41. Final round saw an increasingly nervous Rose side blank on all questions and bonuses whilst the home side gained ground all the way missing just the first and crucially the last question to score five and miss the draw by two. Final totals St. Mary’s A’s 39 Rose and Crown 41.The Rose side also stole the beer leg money and all the Pickled onions on a excellent evenings entertainment. Teams of the week St. Mary’s OscAr’s and Shoulder of Mutton. Week 10 22-11-2010 Just four games in the fixture list this week but all the games are potentially match of the week. First game has the Stopes Tavern Elves hosting current league leaders Rose and Crown Starling and the hosts will be smarting from last weeks close loss and the visitors also struggled to score so a close game will be on the cards and the Elves may just come out on top. St. Mary’s B’s have SunDial Walmersley Rd and Helen’s harem visiting and the Harem may just be the side to tough out a win against a side that is showing a run of form lately. Close but the visitors may just win. Rose and Crown Rammy host the Ramsbottom derby when the Cricket club cross the tracks and climb the hill. The Cricketers showed form last week when beating the Elves in a close game and the Tigers also won a tough game against the Knights this one will also be tough and either side could take the match a draw may be the result but the visitors may just have a point advantage at the end….. Shoulder of Mutton play host the Holcombe Derby when the Hare and Hounds make the short trip up the hill. The Shoulder played well last week and the visitors slipped up, the Hairy Hounds will want to win to keep there challenge at the top on course and this one will not be easy but the visitors may just take it. Four teams have free weeks this week to hone there skills, perhaps in friendlies. Heap Bridge will be refuelling there tour bus, Radcliffe Cricketers will be in the nets, Pack Horse will be grooming and St. Mary’s Oscars will be drunk. |
