PHIL'S COMMENTS
The Ninth week of the season saw the clean up after the sparkle and Autumn taking a firm hold with dank weather and arthritis playing up.
The league had a full fixture list this week and some very close matches again.
First match to report in was the SunDial Walmersley Rd, who had the Radcliffe Cricket Club visiting with Helen’s Harem not expecting to win, Helen nearly brained her team on the individual round as she said “not smarty at all”. Score 36-57.
Second Match saw Paul Gardner’s Stopes Tavern Elves host the Heap Bridge Social Club Phoenix Knights with the confidence of last week’s win still evident, the host’s appeared to have kick started there season and are on a roll as the unfortunate Knights succumbed to a 48-40 defeat. Third match saw Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook host the enigma that is St. Mary’s B Radcliffe, Yosemite Sam back from his travels reports:-
In the battle of the nomads, the Hare and Hounds , now settlers, were taking on St. Mary’s B who has had more home venues than hot dinners.
St. Mary’s B opted to answer the B questions and with both teams sprinting to a good full house, the first round finished 8 all.
Hairy Hound’s cowed to the first individual and the mooed changed as the St. Mary’s formaldehyde expert took maximum points, but the Hairy Hounds hit back when their money expert banked all the points during his Post Decimalisation period, resulting in a round score of seven all, and even totals at 15-15.
Round three saw the only unanswered questions on the night so far fall on the Hounds side, so the St. Mary’s B took the lead with a round win of 6-8. However in the Stink round the Hounds managed to get over the Bush, but the Saints couldn’t march past the “One Tree”. So the round finished 4-1, giving a half way score of Hare and Hounds 25 St. Mary’s B’s 24.
Round five had the Mary’s get the unanswered question, so the Hairy Hounds increased their advantage by taking the round 7-5. Rounds six and seven were both close, but they both saw the Hairy Hounds increase there advantage by a single point in each at 7-6, to give them a five point advantage going into the final round. The last round was no less competitive with both side registering full houses same as the first round, giving final scores of Hare and Hounds 54 St. Mary’s B’s 49. Team of the week Hare and Hounds.
To catch up with there past both teams then had a HOT dinner! After which the Hairy Hounds took the beer leg by a single point, courtesy of the Saints writing two answers down for the Dangerous question.
Fourth match this week saw the PackHorse Affetside host the Shoulder of Mutton Holcombe Village, and in a nip and tuck battle that went all the way to the last question the hosts managed to squeeze a single point win 42-41. Joint match of the week.
Final match this week had the Ramsbottom Cricket Club hosting the Rose and Crown Starling. After almost missing the turn and going to the wrong door, the Rose team arrived and elected to go first, a big mistake.
Round one started with a blank for the Rose Starling and it proved to be the theme for the round as they missed all of there questions, just managing to score a point with a bonus My way. The Rammy Cricket Club managed to score on there first and third questions picking up a bonus Lighthouse to take the lead with a score of 5-1. Round two individual had categories of Damien Hirst, Film theme tunes, Post-Decimalization Coins and Wembley sendings off. Both sides grabbed the first Damien Hirst points, but both sides missed the film tunes however the Cricketers managed a bonus Zhivago. The Rose missed the Coins question and that was also scored for a bonus halfpenny. The Cricketers completed there other questions successfully and the Rose scored on the last, for a round score of 8-4 and totals of 13-5, that had the Rose looking in the corner for a towel to throw. Round three saw the start of a recovery for the Rose when only Gulliver’s travels to Japan was missed and a bonus Earwig was picked up from the Cricket club’s only missed answer. Round score 6-7. Round four stink or twist had a theme of Hills and the Rose Starling sprinted to four points but the Turkey who lives on the Hill proved after much soul searching too far for the Rose and they stuck on 4. The Rammy Cricketers managed to grab just a single point when One Tree Hill proved too hard to climb and the Halftime Score was Ramsbottom Cricket Club 20 Rose and Crown 16.
The Halfway break for fresh air had perked the Rose team of Anne, Helen, Bob and Someone else and round five was a full house for them, with the Cricketers only managing to capture Ronnie Biggs in this round, the Rose had surprisingly took the lead in the match with a 2-8 score and totals of 22-24.
Round six two part questions saw both teams opt for safety on all questions with only the O.T. question stumping the Rose completely who then should have tied the round with Tony McCoy, but the match was again level with scores of 6-8.
Round seven individual had categories of Sweet Trademarks, Red birds, Hogwarts Staff and PC Children’s Characters, both teams had only minor recall problems and a maximum full house was totalled for a score of 38-38 going into the final round. With both sides now playing on top form and scoring every question, the final round was going neck and neck with only the last question remaining, the Rose had the correct answer but someone else took a wrong decision to answer Camper bloody van and the match was lost, to the winning Ramsbottom Cricketers of Michael Everett, Ben Dack, Ian Bell and Chris Woolfall with Pete Spencer question master on the night. Final Scores and Joint match of the week Ramsbottom Cricket Club 46 Rose and Crown Starling 44.
The Rose also capitulated in the Beer Leg and took only the Tie break question.
The Rose and Crown Rammy had a week off.

Week 10 14-11-11
Week ten has a full fixture list with another week of close matches expected.
Match one has Rose and Crown Ramsbottom hosting the PackHorse Affetside in the battle of the hills and PackHorse are showing some good form this year and this match is expected to be close with Rose Rammy coming off of a weeks sabbatical, the tigers will be roaring again, a possible draw or neither side winning by many is the fence sitting prediction.
Match two has the Shoulder of Mutton hosting SunDial Walmersley Rd and with both sides losing last week they will both be up for a win to steady the ship but the hosts may just overcome the Harem but it won’t be an easy win.
Radcliffe Cricket Club, unbeaten, High scoring, top of the league and current champions host the Radcliffe Derby this week, with the Stopes Tavern Elves visiting, and the visitors are on a roll with two consecutive victory’s, will they continue that form ………. Probably not but the host’s will have to work hard for the win.
Heap Bridge Social Club return to base again and have Ramsbottom Cricketers visiting, the hosts are in a run of poor form and recent results suggest that this may continue against a Rammy side that is playing well but I have a feeling that this match may go the hosts way but only just……..
Final match has the Rose and Crown Starling hosting the Hare and Hounds Holcombe Brook with the visitors beating the enigmatic B’s last week they will be up for this one and the Rose will have to up there game to be in with a chance, a close match but the visitors will have the win.
The St. Mary’s B’s are having a week off, and trying to figure why they are not challenging for the title closer.
The Christmas function is looming and ideas for Raffle first prizes are required from teams.
New Players are wanted to strengthen teams contact the league secretary.
